, Design 2013
“My sculptures always have a ‘human dimension’, because the size of the works is oriented to the dimensions of my body; in this way, it is possible to ‘inhabit’ some of them in one’s imagination. For this project, the intention was to actually make it be possible, at least in part, to walk into or inhabit the sculpture TV-Baby.”
The “friendly alien” that has landed on the roof makes a connection between the pedestrian level and the roof level, while at the same time being an ironical statement on the dissolution of reality through the media.
One of the monitors of the over-dimensional TV-Baby is positioned on the edge of the roof of Hotel Kummer, at a spot where flatscreens usually present advertising, but which is also a viewpoint. Instead of the manipulative reality of advertising, the spectator on the street sees people enjoying a panoramic view over the city. The spectator views the spectator; in this way, the pedestrian is encouraged to change perspective and to go up to the roof.
On the roof of Hotel Kummer, one finds oneself on two levels always between, in or below the sculpture, and so automatically becomes a part of it. In this way, TV-Baby serves as a protected area, without ever totally surrendering its sense of vulnerability.
